Once you have decided to study abroad, you should keep the details like your academic achievements in your qualifying examination and your academic interests in higher education in mind to look for suitable universities that offer programs in your favorite area of study. You should also consider admission requirements such as GRE and TOFEL score the university consider, fee structure, academic program structure, faculty and research infrastructure available on the university campus, and a safe environment that embraces a foreign student with compassion. The amount of time a student should have to spend abroad depends on the type of program the student chooses. International universities generally offer three or four years of bachelor’s degrees and two years of master’s programs. Diploma programs, executive programs for professionals, and certificate programs may expect the student to stay abroad from one year to six months. Based on the immigrant policy, students can stay for an additional time abroad to pursue employment and earn. Entry requirements may vary from one university to the other and each country has its unique policy in admitting international students. Most US universities expect students to furnish GRE scores to pursue STEM programs and GMAT scores for management degrees. Students originating from non-English speaking countries must also produce TOFEL or ILTE scores to seek admission in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. University websites generally furnish the academic requirements in their qualifying school final examinations for the international students that seek admission in bachelor’s and Masters’ programs. Students must pay attention to all such details before applying to the universities in foreign.
English is the medium of instruction in most of the universities in the US and the UK. However, there are universities within the EU countries that import education in some of the European languages like German or French. Students that wish to study abroad must carefully study the language requirements. If English is not the medium of instruction, based on the university requirements, the student may have to learn a second language. TOEFL and IELTS are accepted as proof of English proficiency. Students who wish to prove their proficiency in a language other than English must take similar tests in other languages, such as the DELF/DALF and TCF-DAP (French) or the DSF and TestDaF (German).
It is quite unlikely for foreign universities to ask international students to appear for an admission interview. Some universities may conduct student admissions in selected locations. Universities may call for a video interview with prior communication to the student, seeking the student’s preferred date and time to attend an interview.
It is a crucial phase in the student’s journey to reach an overseas educational destination. A student that received an admission letter from the university must plan their time meticulously to reach the university well ahead of the commencement of the academic sessions. You should approach the University for an I-20 letter to apply for a student visa. Upon receiving your Visa, get your travel documents like passport and flight ticket ready. Contact the University for a Social Media Student Group. Talk to your seniors over a phone or by mail to get to know about the accommodation and the other prerequisites you must include in your luggage. Try to choose your accommodation if possible right before you get to the overseas destination. Stay in touch with your peer group, university student coordinators, and seniors if any to get some assistance upon landing in a foreign land.
You may be asked to provide some supporting documentation as part of your application. Once again, requirements vary depending on the country and university, but international students are often asked to provide the following: • Passport photos for identification • A statement of purpose • CV/résumé • Academic references/ letters of recommendation • Certificate and transcripts of your secondary education • Proof of English-language proficiency (e.g. a TOEFL/IELTS certificate, for schools in English-speaking countries), or another language test • Admissions test results (e.g. GMAT/GRE results, for graduate programs)
